Patrick J. Boyle, MD

Patrick J. Boyle, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. Dr. Boyle received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. His postgraduate training included an internship and chief residency at Oregon Health Sciences University and a fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Boyle is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in endocrinology, diabetes,
and metabolism. His research interests include diabetes and glucose metabolism; he is the
author or coauthor of articles, abstracts, and reviews that have appeared in New England Journal
of Medicine, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Annals of Internal Medicine,
and others. Dr. Boyle has
written books and book chapters that include 101 Tips for Improving Your Blood Sugar, The
Clinical Practice of Diabetes Mellitus: Hypoglycemia,
and Interrelationships Between the Central Nervous System and Peripheral Glucose Metabolism. He has served on the editorial board of Diabetes and as a reviewer for such journals as New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of
the American Medical Association, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology,
and Diabetologia.

Dr. Boyle's professional affiliations include service on the Board of Directors of the American
Diabetes Association and Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center at the
University of New Mexico, funded by the National Institutes of Health. His honors include the
National Diabetes Disease Management Leadership Award and the 1996–1997 Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

  John B. Buse, MD, PhD, CDE

John B. Buse, MD, PhD, CDE, is Associate Professor, Director of the
Diabetes Care Center, and Chief of the Division of General Medicine and
Clinical Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine
in Chapel Hill. He also sees patients at the Salem Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Buse received his medical degree and doctorate of philosophy from Duke University in
Durham, North Carolina. He completed his dissertation research at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. He was intern, resident, and chief resident in the Department of Medicine and subsequently a fellow and faculty member in the Section of Endocrinology at the University of Chicago. In 1994,
he joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Buse is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the National Certification
Board for Diabetes Educators. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the
American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Physicians, The Endocrine Society, and the Society of General Internal Medicine. He has been the principal investigator on numerous grants and has published manuscripts and reviews in such journals
as Diabetes, Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology
and Metabolism.

  Steven V. Edelman, MD

Steven V. Edelman, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of California San Diego.
He is also Director of the Diabetes Care Clinic at the Veterans Affairs
Medical Center in San Diego.

Dr. Edelman received his medical degree from the University of California at Davis. His postgraduate training included a residency in internal medicine at UCLA-San Fernando Valley; a clinical fellowship in diabetes and metabolism at the Joslin Clinic; a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts; and a research fellowship in diabetes and metabolism at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Edelman is certified in internal medicine, metabolism, diabetes, and endocrinology.

Dr. Edelman is founder and executive director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), a
series of educational and motivational conferences and health fairs for people with diabetes. He
has written numerous books and publications including articles and abstracts that have been published in such journals as American Journal of Physiology, Diabetes, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Edelman is a reviewer for several journals including Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of
Clinical Investigation
, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. His honors include
being valedictorian of his medical school graduating class; Alumnus Award from the University of California Davis School of Medicine; and Chief Resident's Teacher of the Year Award from the University of California San Diego.

  Vivian A. Fonseca, MD, MRCP

Vivian A. Fonseca, MD, MRCP, is Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he holds the Tullis-Tulane Alumni Chair in Diabetes. He is also Medical Director of Tulane Hospital Diabetes Education Program.

Dr. Fonseca received his medical degree from Bombay University in India.
His postgraduate training included an internship at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Bombay and a research fellowship at Royal Free Hospital in London. Dr. Fonseca is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Dr. Fonseca has written abstracts, reviews, and articles for Diabetes Care, Metabolism, The Endocrinologist, New England Journal of Medicine, and The Lancet. In addition, he has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr. Fonseca is a member of several professional organizations
including the American Heart Association, The Endocrine Society, and the American Diabetes Association, for which he has served on the Board of Directors.

Davida F. Kruger, MSN, APRN-BC, BC-ADM

Davida F. Kruger, MSN, APRN-BC, BC-ADM, is a certified nurse practitioner at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. Ms. Kruger serves on the American Diabetes Association fund-raising committee. She is past chair of the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation and has served on the Research Policy Committee. She is a past president of the Health Care and Education Committee of the American Diabetes Association and was Associate Editor of Diabetes Spectrum.

Ms. Kruger received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Boston College and her master of science in nursing degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She is board certified by the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center in both primary-care and advanced diabetes management. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society.

Ms. Kruger has written articles and book chapters on diabetes research and clinical practice. Her work has appeared in prominent publications including Conn's Current Therapy, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and New England Journal of Medicine. She is a member of several professional organizations including the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the American Nurses Association. Her honors include the Florence Nightingale Award.

Catherine L. Martin, MS, APRN, BC-ADM, CDE, is Trial Coordinator for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) study. She is also a Clinical Care Coordinator for the Intensive Insulin Management Program at the University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor. Her past positions include Director of the Diabetes Disease Management Pilot Project and Clinical Study Coordinator at the University of Michigan Health System.

Ms. Martin received her master's degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is a registered nurse, a certified diabetes educator, and a member of several professional organizations including the American Nurses Association, the Michigan Nurses Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the American Diabetes Association.

Ms. Martin has written abstracts, reviews, and articles for Diabetes Care, New England Journal of Medicine, and Diabetes and has lectured nationally on such topics as peripheral neuropathy and intensive insulin therapy for patients with diabetes. Her honors include the Julio Santiago Diabetes Research Clinic Achievement Award and the R. Faye McCain Memorial Award for Leadership and Scholarly Excellence in Medical Surgical Nursing.

Bernard Zinman, MDCM, FRCP(C), FACP

 Bernard Zinman, MDCM, FRCP(C), FACP, is Director of the Leadership
Sinai Centre for Diabetes and holds the Sam and Judy Pencer Family Chair
in Diabetes Research at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto, Canada. He is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Zinman is the principal investigator of the University of Toronto Centre for
the DCCT/EDIC study.

Dr. Zinman has written articles in national and international journals, book chapters, and editorials.
He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes (awarded by the DCCT investigators), the Alois Beringer Lecture Award, and the Frederick G. Banting and Gerald Wong Awards of the Canadian Diabetes Association. In November 2000, Dr. Zinman chaired the scientific program committee of the
17th International Diabetes Federation Congress held in Mexico City.
