HISTORY AND ROLE OF DHEC

Recent research has implicated numerous hormones—not just insulin and glucagon, but also amylin, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), and many others—in the pathophysiology of diabetes. In response
to this new knowledge, DHEC has been established to keep health-care professionals abreast of
new developments involving these hormones and therapeutic compounds related to these hormones.

Many dedicated and renowned diabetes experts serve as DHEC faculty. Since the inception of
DHEC in 2002, this multidisciplinary group of professionals has provided a wide variety of educational initiatives, including those available on this Web site. A number of other initiatives—including live symposia, grand rounds, and valuable enduring materials (monographs, CD-ROMs)—have also been developed.

Mission Statement
DHEC is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to furthering education on diabetes-related hormones—including insulin, glucagon, amylin, GLP-1, and others—for physicians, diabetes educators, nurses, pharmacists, and other health-care and allied professionals interested in the treatment of diabetes.
